Parvana is not just a typical young afghan girl but she would like to be. She is living in a city Kabul in Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. She is surrounded by violence, poverty, killing, losing, and illnesses. Parvana is a strong, confident girl who takes on anything just for her family to be happy and healthy. she faces challenges throughout the book, which she rises to the challenge to get through it for her family. She takes on responsibilities of what an adult should but all she wants is to be a normal kid again. Not long after, her family sees her as their only hope for survival. Nooria is Parvana's bossy older sister. She is sixteen years old and a bit grumpy at times but sometimes she can be loving and caring towards her siblings. Nooria looks after her younger brother and sister and also helps around the house. Father is an educated, intelligent man who works in the marketplace as a letter reader and writer, he used to work as a history teacher at school until the school got bombed. He needs to be accompanied by Parvana as his leg was blown off by a bomb. Father calls Parvana "my little Malia" because she was just like her, she never gave up on something she loved or cared about.Father knows how important it is for his daughters to be strong, educated, and independent, particularly since the Taliban tries so hard to make women the opposite. Father is Parvana's inspiration. Parvanas mother also recognized as Fatana, she is a strong women who supports and displays a sense of capability no matter what to her cherished family by reassuring them in unsafe situations, teaching them independent ways so that, one day they may fend for themselves in this brutal country. Mrs. Weera is truly unique. She's a large woman, and with her "distinctive way walking" as said in chapter 8. she knows how to pull a family back together after a long time fighting, she often referrers them to as a hockey team because they need to help each other out to score and win. Mrs Weeras lives her life through a metaphor as a team. She is a helpful lady who comes to live with the family and displays great courage. She is a strong, independent woman who pushes the family to fight harder, and unlike most other women in Afghanistan, she is not intimidated by the Taliban Shauzia plays the character of a young 11 year old girl and known throughout the novel to be Parvana's best friend. Shauzia also works in the market and also disguises herself as boy to so that her family can earn extra income. Despite the fact that Shauzia is within the jurisdiction of the Taliban organisation this does not prevent her from dreaming and having personal goals set out for herself, such as leaving Afghanistan and travelling to Paris. |
